Private autism evaluation vs school evaluation. Which one do we need?

We are on a waitlist for a medical autism evaluation, but the school says they can evaluate sooner. Are these the same thing? I do not want to waste time or miss services.

They are related but not the same. A medical autism evaluation can diagnose autism and often helps with insurance-covered therapy. A school evaluation decides whether your child qualifies for special education under an educational category and what supports are needed at school. You can do both at the same time. If the school can evaluate sooner, take that route while staying on the medical waitlist. One report can inform the other, but neither fully replaces the other.
