Autism evaluation waitlist is 9 months. What should we do while waiting?

The developmental pediatrician waitlist is 9 months. My son is 2 and a half, not talking much, and daycare is raising concerns. What can we start before there is an official diagnosis?

Do not wait quietly for 9 months. Get on cancellation lists, ask your pediatrician for speech and OT referrals, and contact Early Intervention if your child is under 3. If your child is 3 or older, request a school district evaluation in writing. You do not need a medical diagnosis to start many supports. Keep a dated list of concerns and examples, because that will make the eventual evaluation more useful.
