Can a school diagnose autism?

The school evaluation says my son qualifies under autism, but our pediatrician says only a doctor can diagnose. I am confused. Is school autism the same as a medical diagnosis?

A school can identify a child under the educational category of autism for special education. That is not the same as a medical diagnosis from a clinician. The school decision can support an IEP and services at school. The medical diagnosis can help with insurance, therapy, and medical records. Many families benefit from both. If the school found educational autism, ask what services and goals they are proposing now, not whether the label is "official enough."
