Can my child have both an IEP and private therapy?

The school hinted that because my daughter gets private speech, she may not need school speech on her IEP. That sounds wrong to me, but I do not know how to explain why.

Yes. Private therapy and school services answer different questions. Private speech may target medical or developmental needs across daily life. School speech asks whether speech or language support is needed for access and progress at school. One does not automatically cancel the other. I would ask the school to explain, with data, whether your daughter needs school-based speech to meet educational goals. If they say no, ask for that decision in Prior Written Notice.
