Can a private school refuse to follow my child's IEP?

We are touring a private special needs school and they said they do not technically follow public school IEPs. That surprised me. If we enroll privately, what happens to the IEP?

If you privately place your child in a private school, that school usually does not have to implement the public school IEP the same way a district school would. There are exceptions, especially when the district places or funds the placement. Some privately placed students get a services plan, but it is usually more limited than an IEP. Before enrolling, ask exactly which services are included, who provides them, and whether the district remains involved. Get it in writing.
