Does Florida Medicaid cover ABA therapy?

We live in Florida and our daughter (age 6) has an autism diagnosis. She is on Florida Medicaid through a managed care plan. The clinic we called said they take Medicaid, but also said authorizations are a mess.

Does Florida Medicaid cover ABA therapy? What should we ask for so we are not stuck waiting months with no answer?

Yes. Florida Medicaid covers behavior analysis / ABA services when they are medically necessary for eligible members. For kids under 21, EPSDT still matters: medically necessary services to correct or ameliorate a condition can be approved even when they go beyond a narrow reading of the fee schedule.

What to do this week:
1) Call your Medicaid managed care plan and ask for behavior analysis / ABA prior authorization requirements.
2) Ask which codes and provider types they accept, and whether the clinic you want is enrolled and in network.
3) Have the provider submit the assessment and treatment plan with clear goals, not just a diagnosis letter.
4) Get a reference number for every call. If the plan stalls, ask for the denial or delay in writing.

Florida publishes a Behavior Analysis Services coverage policy through AHCA, and plans still apply their own authorization workflows on top of it. Provider shortages are real, so coverage on paper does not always mean a quick start date. If you are told ABA is uncovered for a Medicaid-enrolled child with documented medical necessity, treat that as something to appeal, not as the final answer.
