Can Medicaid be secondary insurance for a disabled child?

We have employer insurance, but copays for therapy are crushing us. Another parent said Medicaid can sometimes be secondary even if parents earn too much. Is that real?

It is real in many states, but the path varies. Some children qualify for Medicaid through disability-based programs, waivers, TEFRA, or Katie Beckett-style options where parent income may be treated differently than regular Medicaid. When Medicaid is secondary, it can sometimes help with copays, deductibles, and services private insurance does not cover. Search your state developmental disability agency and ask specifically about children with private insurance and high support needs.
